How Name Harmony Works

A simple, rule-based check for boundary letter clashes, vowel endings, and syllable balance between a given name and family surname.

Score Breakdown

1. Boundary Letters

Smooth transition: no clashing consonants between first and last name.

Last name root starting letter:'m'

2. Vowel Endings

Vowel match bonus (+15 pts): both names end in matching vowel sounds.

Ta' Marbutah (ة) counts as an 'a' vowel ending.

3. Syllable Balance

Long combination (-10 pts): more than 6 syllables can feel heavy.

The 3 Scoring Rules

Every combination starts with a baseline score of 50 points. Then these three rules apply:

1. Avoiding Boundary Letter Clashes

Penalizing repeated consonants when names meet

When the last letter of a first name is the same as the first letter of the last name (like 'Uthman' and 'Najjar' repeating 'N'), speaking them together requires an awkward pause. We deduct 20 points.

How 'Al-' (أل التعريف) is handled

Most Arabic family names include 'Al-' (like 'Al-Mansouri' or 'An-Najjar'). The calculator automatically strips the prefix to check the actual root consonant ('M' in Al-Mansouri, 'N' in An-Najjar). This prevents false penalties for names ending in vowels (like 'Reda Al-Mansouri') while still catching real clashes.

2. Rewarding Melodic Vowel Endings

Giving a bonus when both names end with vowels

Names that end in vowels create a natural, flowing cadence when spoken aloud. We add 5 to 15 points if both the first and last name end in soft vowels.

Ta' Marbutah (ة) in Arabic names

In Arabic, female names ending in Ta' Marbutah (such as Fatima, Aisha, and Khadija) end with a soft 'a' sound. The calculator recognizes 'ة' as an open vowel so female names receive the vowel harmony bonus when paired with vowel-ending surnames (like Al-Mansouri or Al-Hashimi).

3. Syllable Count and Cadence

Rewarding full names of comfortable length

Full names sound best when they are between 3 and 5 syllables (or up to 6 in Arabic with 'Al-'). Combinations that are too short feel clipped, while combinations over 6 syllables can feel unnecessarily long.
